Custom Searches

Google allows you to create custom search engines that search only specific sites. (http://www.google.com/cse) This can be very useful for searching a collection of sites you regularly use.

Two custom searches we use regularly on the COG team:

Top 100 Newspapers – the top 100 newspapers in the U.S. by circulation. Good for quickly getting backup for facts, finding out what the issues are, etc.
Think Tanks – a large collection of various think tanks and research institutions. Good for finding impassioned rhetoric, getting an overview of the issue, or occasionally actually finding a credible study (gasp!)

Custom searches like these let you filter out the fluff and blogs and search only sites you actually want.

If you have custom searches you use, or ideas for ones you’d like to see us develop, don’t hesitate to leave a comment!
